Arguably The World's Best Lens Caps!

*** Update

Although I still like the replacement plastic lid covers discussed below in the original article, We have found a new product that we prefer using to protect our lenses. LensCoat (a leading manufacturer of neoprene covers for cameras, lenses and tripods) is now offering a product that I feel is arguably the best lens cap solutions for large lenses. The product is called the LensCoat Hoodie.

We find the Lenscoat Hoodie can be quickly and easily installed or removed, offering excellent protection to the lens' front glass whether the hood is in the storage position or perhaps more importantly, offers the same level of protection with hood installed in the shooting position! The Lenscoat Hoodie is reasonably inexpensive and quite versatile!

We are most impressed with the fact that we nature/wildlife/sports/outdoor photographers now have a lens cap that will allow us to protect our lenses while the lens hood is in the shooting position! I don't know how many times I have found myself in the field shooting when the subject decides to leave the immediate area. As natures/wildlife photographers we generally must act quickly and move with the subject. When doing so there is little time to remove the lens hood and place it in the storage position and then place a lens cap over the lens, generally we must move quickly with our subjects and our valuable glass is generally unprotected and exposed to the elements when we do so. The Lenscoat Hoodie changes all this! Now we can quickly cover and protect the lens with the lens hood in the shooting position, as we pursuit of our photographic subjects. Thank you LensCoat!

The Hoodie is a neoprene cover that stretches easily then fits snuggly around your lens hood. We have quickly become big fans of the LensCoat Hoodie!

LensCoat's Hoodie is shown installed on a 300mm f2.8 L Canon (lens shown is covered by a camo lens cover also by Lenscoat) with the hood in the shooting positions, we feel this makes the Hoodie a terrific and very useful nature photography accessory.

Original Article Below

As nature photographers we are always looking for ways to make life in the field more convenient, one inconvenience for me had been removing or installing the standard Canon leather lens cap for my 300mm f2.8 lens. It seems like it always took a substantial amount of time and effort for me to remove the Canon original leather lens cap, and once removed one needed to be careful handling the cap and putting it somewhere safely away, not to mention the cost of replacing the leather lens cap if you lost it! The solution is a simple one (yes, simple is always the better), the use of a plastic lid that covers glass cooking-ware bowls, is perfect.

The lid (lens cap) I use on my 300mm f2.8 fits securely on lens rim after the lens hood has been re-attached in the storage position on the lens. These lids (lens caps) are inexpensive and readily available. The lid pictured below is an Anchor 2 cup/472ml lid. This lid can be purchased at Wal-mart in the kitchen department, the lids come in a 6 piece package (3 bowls and 3 lids), the price for the six piece outfit is less than $5. It's a win, win situation, you get 3 lens caps that will fit your Canon 300mm f2.8 IS (or the Canon 400mm f4 DO) and you have three nice bowls left to give your spouse as a gift :)

Inexpensive (really inexpensive when compared to almost any photographic accessories :), fits securely and protects the lens, easy to use, quick to install and remove, and easily replaceable ...................... who could argue?

There is a Pyrex brand lid that will fit the 300mm/400mm lens hood, when the lens hood is installed on the lens, not sure of the model at the moment but will list the information in the table below when I get it (took this one directly from my wife's collection from our kitchen).

  Nikon 500mm f4 AFS ..... Pyrex 4 cup/1 L lid **

* The lid's outside perimeter was trimmed very slightly, and a couple of strips of velcro (soft side) were attached to the inside lip, making the lid's fit more secure.

** Fits the Nikon 500mm f4 AFS beautifully and is available at Wal-Mart in the kitchen section, sold in combination with the Pyrex glass bowl for under $4.00.

Please note - lid model numbers are subject to change.

At the moment, I am not familiar with what lids may fit Nikon or other lens brands if anyone has any information as to what lid may fit what lens, and is willing to share, I will be happy to list it above.
